June 3, 2009 -- California Stand Off Wine Tasting

Don't be standoffish...Our Wednesday Wine Tasting theme for June is called a Stand Off Wine Tasting. A Stand Off tasting is when you taste the same varietal of wine from different regions. This type of tasting allows you to compare and contrast varietals from different areas of a wine producing region, state, country, or from around the world. We're starting close to home with a California Stand Off Tasting. For example, you'll taste a Chardonnay from Monterey, one from Sonoma, and one from Mendocino. You'll taste a Merlot from Napa, one from Santa Barbara, and one from the Central Coast.
As always, this event is a great way to sample wines, socialize, and have a great time. Our tastings aren't "stuffy" or "snobbish" in any way. You will enjoy yourself whether you are a wine novice or a wine expert.
Guest Pourers will be Georgene and Vidal Falcon, proprietors of
The Grice-Fearing Bed & Breakfast.
Cost is $15 per person and includes light appetizers, samplings from six different wines, tasting notes, and a fun evening. RSVP Requested (252-335-1163).

May 29, 2009 -- Ticky Tacky

The first-ever band that actually originated at The City Wine Sellar is BACK by popular demand to rock you out in true Ticky-Tacky fashion.
Having lunch one day at City Wine, the eternally optimistic and notorious "we'll try anything" couple, Bill and Britney Luton, said something along the lines of, "Hey, we can put together a band. Why don't you book US on a Friday night?" Tactfully not letting them in on the fact that I hear some variation of this comment at least five times a month, I nervously pencilled (note pencilled) them in under "Bill and Britney." They didn't yet have a name for their band. Within the hour, they had their name and were walking out the door making plans for their gig.
True to form, they put on an amazing show of rock, pop, and top 40 tunes -- a ticky tacky performance of songs from an eclectic mix of genres. I'm glad they didn't tell me until AFTER their first show that they had only had practiced a couple of times as a group!
They've re-grouped, so to speak, with a new member, Toby Tate, have written some original tunes, expanded their playlist, and have actually practiced for their May 29th gig. So, expect an even more electrifying show on the 29th. They'll play from 7-10 pm; Deli fare served till 9 pm. Call 252-335-1163 for more information

May 22, 2009 -- Chuck Hodges

A local favorite from Camden, NC, Chuck Hodges IS music. Described on his web site as "part alt-country, part Americana, and part modern rock - and smothered with soulfulness," Chuck is the pig-pickin' cake of entertainers.  He has a quiet talent that will electrify you.
For those of you who aren't from the South, a pig-pickin' cake is a cake of Southern tradition served at summer pig-pickings.  It is a mixture of many great ingredients that can stand on their own in taste, but combined make for an over-the-top tasting experience.

April 1, 2009 -- Local Wines at Wednesday Wine Tasting

Once upon a time in a small city on the coast, a community struggled to make sense of all that was happening in their land and the lands beyond. The banks were threatening to repossess the Gingerbread House. The House That Jack Built had been on the market for over 365 days without an offer. The stock market had such a great fall that, even though there was a new President, no matter how hard they tried, all the King’s horses and all the King’s men were having a difficult time putting the economy back together again. The Ten O’clock Scholars showed up at quitting time, and couldn’t agree on neither cause nor solution.
Townspeople were frustrated at the news that, while things were so terrible for most, those who seemed to have caused the problems were still in their counting houses counting out their money. They decided to take matters into their own hands and do what they knew would help – shop. Shop locally. So, Wee Willie Winkle ran through the town asking all citizens to begin spending their sixpence at local businesses. It started slowly at first. The Dish and the Spoon began eating out again. Jack and Jill began fetching a latte as part of their morning routine. Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet at the local bookstore and ended up buying the entire Harry Potter series. All five Little Piggys went to market for some roast beef. Soon, the idea picked up steam like The Little Engine That Could. Little Boy Blue decided to invest in a brand new bedroom suite. Goldilocks bought a car from one of the “Big Three” Bear’s dealerships. The Three Little Pigs bought a home from B.B. Wolf Realty. The Man in the Moon saw from afar what was happening, and he spread the word over the river and through the woods. All over the country people began shopping again. So began their long journey toward happily ever after.
This month, to do our part to help put the local economy together again, we will be tasting wines from two local wineries – Sanctuary Vineyards and Martin Vineyards, both located on Knotts Island. Our Guest Pourers this month will be Susan Hinkle, Julie Papineau, and Amy Alcerer from Page After Page Bookstore.

February 4, 2009 -- Red Hot Wine Tasting

The color red is dynamic, on the color palette and in our lives. It represents love, warmth, and comfort as well as passion, excitement, and intensity. It signifies danger, yet portrays a strong sense of confidence. Artists dab it into or splash it on their creative works to express infinite emotions and meanings. Red is a powerful hue that elicits deep and dramatic feelings in the color spectrum of our souls.
That’s why we chose Red as our theme for this month’s tasting. That, and the oh-so obvious “Red” connection with the month of February – the Month of Looooovvve and American Heart Month. Don’t fear, my wonderful white wine lovers. We will not be limiting our selection to only red wines. We will taste wines with “red” as part of their names.
So, make February 4th a Red Letter Day in your life by joining us at The City Wine Sellar for our monthly wine tasting. Sipping, snacks, and socializing from 6-7:30 pm. Dress the part--wear a red dress, red hat, red lipstick, red tie, red socks, red undies...whatever puts you in the red-hot mood! Cost is $15 per person. RSVP is requested. 252-335-1163 or d_malenfant@yahoo.com.

He's been so busy with his beach gigs this summer that we haven't been able to book him for quite awhile.  So, don't miss him this Friday night.  Music from 7-10 pm; Deli and Cuezzo's Cafe open until 9:00 pm.  Call 252-335-1163 for more information.

October 31, 2008 -- Karaoke with Kathi Hartzell

It could get a little frightening this Friday night, with an evening of karaoke at The City Wine Sellar!  Showcase your goulish talent (or lack thereof) with friends and guests cheering you on.
The rules of a (fun) karaoke night -- be bold, go forth alone or in large groups, pick cheesy dance songs, pay attention to the monitor, ALWAYS hail the performer, and HAVE FUN!  The best karaoke is when it's not necessarily the best karaoke. You know what I mean.
Don't fret, however.  Even if no one has Karaoke Kahonas, there will still be entertainment. Kathi Hartzell, our Karaoke Kween for the evening, will showcase her professional singing talent for your enjoyment.  Just remember...
"On Halloween the thing you must do
Is pretend that nothing can frighten you
And if somethin' scares you and you want to run
Just let on like it's Halloween fun." (Author Unknown)
Entertainment 7-10 pm; Deli and Cuezzo's Cafe open till 9 pm. Call 252-335-1163 fmi.

October 17, 2008 -- Sarah Leary

Chick Power!!! Sarah Leary will spice up The City Wine Sellar on Friday evening as our first female act.  We've had bands with female members (Ticky Tacky) and female guests (Connected), but never all all-female gig.  It's a first -- and you know we're all about doing things new and different at the ole CWS!  Sarah is an acoustic diva who will play a little folk and a little rock.  She has an authentic, natural sound all her own.  One day you'll see her on TV and say to yourself, "I saw her at The City Wine Sellar before she became famous!"  Music 7-10; Deli and Cuezzo's Cafe open till 9.  Call 252-335-1163 for more information.

October 10, 2008 -- Nick Simmons

Nick Simmons will be going it alone on Friday night at The City Wine Sellar, but don't think for a second that it won't be a spectacular show.  You know him as singer and guitarist for Further Adieu; however, he is an amazingly talented solo act.  It'll be a treat for all in attendance.  On stage from 7-10 pm; enjoy dinner till 9 pm.  Call 252-335-1163 for more information.

October 3, 2008 - Chuck Hodges

"Like an old friend you never knew you had, Chuck's music greets you with a familiarity that's almost palpable. Startlingly revelatory lyrics and instantly memorable melodies invoke nearly every human emotion as songs about truth, love, heartache and hope unfold like the melodic chapters in a musical book. Unabashed and disarming, and with a voice that's at once wounded yet hopeful, Chuck writes songs that draw you in with their rich imagery, and then keep you with their musicality."  -- from www.chuckhodges.com
I couldn't have said it better myself!  "Musicality" has made it into my "word list" for future use.  Visit a couple of old friends on Friday night at The City Wine Sellar and lose yourself in the music of Chuck Hodges.  Music 7-10 pm; Deli fare served till 9 pm.
