February 3, 2010 -- French Wine Tasting

They say the French know love like no one else. Or, maybe they just know kissing. Who is to say? Knowing and mastering are two different things. I'm pretty sure that we Americans can give them a run for their Euros on the whole love thing.
With Valentine's Day on the way, we thought it would be the perfect time to hold our French-themed wine tasting. We will taste a variety of wines from the serious side of love and wine, The Georges Dubeouf vineyards, including their Cuvee Saint Valentin Saint Amour Red Boujolais and their new Patchwork series (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay). We will also get a little more light-hearted with our love by featuring French Maid Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc. To round out our selection, we've chosen a Pouilly Fuisse by Georges Duboeuf. For those of you who don't know, Pouilly Fuisse was one of Natalie Woods favorite wines.
Join us at City Wine from 6:00-7:30 pm, this Wednesday, February 3rd for a romantic and fun evening of sipping. Please RSVP via email to d_malenfant@yahoo.com, by phone 252-335-1163, or via this evite. Feel free to forward this evite to friends and lovers. ;-)

January 6, 2010 -- A Conundrum with The Bitches Wine Tasting

A conundrum is "a paradoxical, insoluble, or difficult problem; a dilemma," according to Websters.com (one of my favorite web sites, by the way). We will be having what you might call a double-conundrum evening on Wednesday night. The first being whether to refer to my Guest Pourers by their real moniker (thanks, Websters.com Thesaurus feature ;-)), or to speak of them in more appropriate language so as not to offend anyone.
Our Guest Pourers have been known for years as "The Bayshore Bitches." It just doesn't seem right to call them anything else, such as "The Bayshore Babes" which I had to use in newspaper advertisements. These ladies will explain how they got their name as they serve you with attitude on Wednesday evening. Welcome Beverly Madrin, Tapp Robinson, Sue Thomson, Bea Southworth, Kathy Minschew, and Gwen Hedgepeth as our first Guest Pourers of 2010.
Our second conundrum isn't truly a conundrum. It's the wine selection for the evening. The Bitches will be serving wines from The Conundrum Winery in Monterey County, CA (Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Pinot Noir), as well as our popular Bitch wine, a red grenache from Australia.
Join us from 6:00-7:30 for a night of fun and wine. Cost is $15 per person and includes light appetizers, samples of six wines (we do allow second pours), printed tasting sheets, and loads of fun. RSVP requested. 252-335-1163.

December 18, 2009 -- Chuck Hodges & His Makeshift Band

This group of locals is a little bit country, a little bit rock 'n roll! More specifically, "progressive modern rock and alternative country." The result is a "bluesy-folksy, roots-rockish, guitar-centric sound." Everyone who hears Chuck Hodges and His Makeshift Band falls in love with their laid back style. They will calm you and energize you at the same time. Their music has a way of making you feel like all is right with the world.

"Like an old friend you never knew you had, Chuck's music greets you with a familiarity that's almost palpable. Startlingly revelatory lyrics and instantly memorable melodies invoke nearly every human emotion as songs about truth, love, heartache and hope unfold like the melodic chapters in a musical book. Unabashed and disarming, and with a voice that's at once wounded yet hopeful, Chuck writes songs that draw you in with their rich imagery, and then keep you with their musicality."

Music from 7-10 pm; Deli fare served until 9 pm; Call 252-335-1163 for more info.

October 30, 2009 -- Ticky Tacky

The first-ever band that actually originated at The City Wine Sellar in downtown Elizabeth City will entertain in true ticky tacky fashion. The original Ticky Tacky began as a four-piece band that has resulted in a few spinoff bands, such as The Charlie Hoidal Band. Ticky Tacky is currently a two-piece band that sounds like a full band with their crowd-pleasing use of a sweet little loop station.
Fifty percent of this husband-wife duo, Britney Luton sings lead vocals, plays bass, and egg shakers. Bill Luton croons some vocals, plays guitar, harmonica, and works the loop station.
They have an originals-heavy flavor; with lots of great cover tunes.

Wednesday Wine Tasting -- August 5, 2009

Except for the American woman, nothing interests the eye of the American man more than an automobile, or seems so important to him as an object of aesthetic appreciation.  (Alfred Hamilton Barr, Jr.)
Wednesday's wine tasting will be a California-focused, automotive-themed tasting with two well-respected brands from the West Coast.  Auto Moto wines are produced in the North and Central Viticultural areas at state-of-the-art facilities, combining Old World winemaking techniques with New World technologies.  Vroom! From the Sonoma, CA area, we will have two organic wines from The Red Truck family of wines.  Originally, a Cline brand, it is now owned by industry wine veterans Dan Leese and Doug Walker, with Charlie Tsegeletos as winemaker.  They leave the fun in winemaking.
Our Guest Pourers hail from the local Courtesy Ford in Elizabeth City.  Brent Buhl, Shannon Stryker, and Jessica Everett will serve you with classic car style. Will will have Erin Helvig and Steve Raisor collaborating for background sounds of easy listening, classical, light jazz, and pop tunes.
We will taste a Riesling, an organic Sauvignon Blanc, a Chardonnay, a Merlot, a Cabernet, and an organic Zinfandel.  Tasting held from 6-7:30 pm; $15 per person. Call 252-335-1163 to RSVP.

July 17, 2009 -- Chuck Hodges

A local favorite from Camden, NC, Chuck Hodges IS music. Described on his web site as "part alt-country, part Americana, and part modern rock - and smothered with soulfulness," Chuck is the pig-pickin' cake of entertainers. He has a quiet talent that will electrify you.

For those of you who aren't from the South, a pig-pickin' cake is a cake of Southern tradition served at summer pig-pickings. It is a mixture of many great ingredients that can stand on their own in taste, but combined make for an over-the-top tasting experience.

June 3, 2009 -- California Stand Off Wine Tasting

Don't be standoffish...Our Wednesday Wine Tasting theme for June is called a Stand Off Wine Tasting. A Stand Off tasting is when you taste the same varietal of wine from different regions. This type of tasting allows you to compare and contrast varietals from different areas of a wine producing region, state, country, or from around the world. We're starting close to home with a California Stand Off Tasting. For example, you'll taste a Chardonnay from Monterey, one from Sonoma, and one from Mendocino. You'll taste a Merlot from Napa, one from Santa Barbara, and one from the Central Coast.
As always, this event is a great way to sample wines, socialize, and have a great time. Our tastings aren't "stuffy" or "snobbish" in any way. You will enjoy yourself whether you are a wine novice or a wine expert.
Guest Pourers will be Georgene and Vidal Falcon, proprietors of
The Grice-Fearing Bed & Breakfast.
Cost is $15 per person and includes light appetizers, samplings from six different wines, tasting notes, and a fun evening. RSVP Requested (252-335-1163).

May 29, 2009 -- Ticky Tacky

The first-ever band that actually originated at The City Wine Sellar is BACK by popular demand to rock you out in true Ticky-Tacky fashion.
Having lunch one day at City Wine, the eternally optimistic and notorious "we'll try anything" couple, Bill and Britney Luton, said something along the lines of, "Hey, we can put together a band. Why don't you book US on a Friday night?" Tactfully not letting them in on the fact that I hear some variation of this comment at least five times a month, I nervously pencilled (note pencilled) them in under "Bill and Britney." They didn't yet have a name for their band. Within the hour, they had their name and were walking out the door making plans for their gig.
True to form, they put on an amazing show of rock, pop, and top 40 tunes -- a ticky tacky performance of songs from an eclectic mix of genres. I'm glad they didn't tell me until AFTER their first show that they had only had practiced a couple of times as a group!
They've re-grouped, so to speak, with a new member, Toby Tate, have written some original tunes, expanded their playlist, and have actually practiced for their May 29th gig. So, expect an even more electrifying show on the 29th. They'll play from 7-10 pm; Deli fare served till 9 pm. Call 252-335-1163 for more information

May 22, 2009 -- Chuck Hodges

A local favorite from Camden, NC, Chuck Hodges IS music. Described on his web site as "part alt-country, part Americana, and part modern rock - and smothered with soulfulness," Chuck is the pig-pickin' cake of entertainers.  He has a quiet talent that will electrify you.
For those of you who aren't from the South, a pig-pickin' cake is a cake of Southern tradition served at summer pig-pickings.  It is a mixture of many great ingredients that can stand on their own in taste, but combined make for an over-the-top tasting experience.
