August 4, 2010 -- Wednesday Wine Tasting -- Wines from Spain

We have chosen Spanish wines for our August wine tasting, in honor of Spain winning the World Cup for the first time ever! ¡Felicidades, Spain. Some other interesting news in Spain this week: Michelle Obama and her daughter, Sasha, will be visiting the resort city of Marbella today. Santander, Spain’s largest bank is set to buy 318 branches in Britain from the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS). I guess they won’t have to change the initials. Beaches across Spain have been closed to swimmers as the jellyfish arrive in what is being described as the largest jellyfish invasion in two years. Ouch.
With regard to wine, Spain has over 2.9 million acres of grapes planted, making it one of the most widely planted wine producing nations, according to Wikipedia. It’s the third largest producer of wines (US is fourth), and it ranks ninth in wine consumption. Spain is known for their wines from the Rioja region, as well as their fine sparkling Cava. We’ll try those, as well as a few more! ¡Salud
