Wednesday Wine Tasting -- August 5, 2009

Wednesday's wine tasting will be a California-focused, automotive-themed tasting with two well-respected brands from the West Coast. Auto Moto wines are produced in the North and Central Viticultural areas at state-of-the-art facilities, combining Old World winemaking techniques with New World technologies. Vroom! From the Sonoma, CA area, we will have two organic wines from The Red Truck family of wines. Originally, a Cline brand, it is now owned by industry wine veterans Dan Leese and Doug Walker, with Charlie Tsegeletos as winemaker. They leave the fun in winemaking.
Our Guest Pourers hail from the local Courtesy Ford in Elizabeth City. Brent Buhl, Shannon Stryker, and Jessica Everett will serve you with classic car style. Will will have Erin Helvig and Steve Raisor collaborating for background sounds of easy listening, classical, light jazz, and pop tunes.
We will taste a Riesling, an organic Sauvignon Blanc, a Chardonnay, a Merlot, a Cabernet, and an organic Zinfandel. Tasting held from 6-7:30 pm; $15 per person. Call 252-335-1163 to RSVP.

For those of you who aren't from the South, a pig-pickin' cake is a cake of Southern tradition served at summer pig-pickings. It is a mixture of many great ingredients that can stand on their own in taste, but combined make for an over-the-top tasting experience.

June 3, 2009 -- California Stand Off Wine Tasting

Don't be standoffish...Our Wednesday Wine Tasting theme for June is called a Stand Off Wine Tasting. A Stand Off tasting is when you taste the same varietal of wine from different regions. This type of tasting allows you to compare and contrast varietals from different areas of a wine producing region, state, country, or from around the world. We're starting close to home with a California Stand Off Tasting. For example, you'll taste a Chardonnay from Monterey, one from Sonoma, and one from Mendocino. You'll taste a Merlot from Napa, one from Santa Barbara, and one from the Central Coast.
As always, this event is a great way to sample wines, socialize, and have a great time. Our tastings aren't "stuffy" or "snobbish" in any way. You will enjoy yourself whether you are a wine novice or a wine expert.
Guest Pourers will be Georgene and Vidal Falcon, proprietors of The Grice-Fearing Bed & Breakfast.
Cost is $15 per person and includes light appetizers, samplings from six different wines, tasting notes, and a fun evening. RSVP Requested (252-335-1163).

May 29, 2009 -- Ticky Tacky

Having lunch one day at City Wine, the eternally optimistic and notorious "we'll try anything" couple, Bill and Britney Luton, said something along the lines of, "Hey, we can put together a band. Why don't you book US on a Friday night?" Tactfully not letting them in on the fact that I hear some variation of this comment at least five times a month, I nervously pencilled (note pencilled) them in under "Bill and Britney." They didn't yet have a name for their band. Within the hour, they had their name and were walking out the door making plans for their gig.
True to form, they put on an amazing show of rock, pop, and top 40 tunes -- a ticky tacky performance of songs from an eclectic mix of genres. I'm glad they didn't tell me until AFTER their first show that they had only had practiced a couple of times as a group!

They've re-grouped, so to speak, with a new member, Toby Tate, have written some original tunes, expanded their playlist, and have actually practiced for their May 29th gig. So, expect an even more electrifying show on the 29th. They'll play from 7-10 pm; Deli fare served till 9 pm. Call 252-335-1163 for more information
